Históricamente, los gatos negros fueron asociados simbólicamente abrujería y al mal. En la tradición hebrea y babilónica, los gatos se comparan a serpientes. El gato era adorado en Egipto y matar a uno era considerado un crimen capital. En Europa, excepto algunos países un gato negro que cruza su trayectoria se considera buena suerte; sin embargo, fueron vistos por la iglesia como asociados a las brujas. En el siglo XVII, el gato comenzó a ser asociado a la brujería en muchas áreas del mundo. El gato negro fue visto generalmente como buena suerte; sin embargo, en USA y zonas de Europa, la asociación con las brujas los hizo ser considerados como portadores de mala suerte. En Irlanda, cuando un gato negro cruza la trayectoria de una persona a la luz de la luna, significa que va a haber una enfermedad epidémica. En Italia desde hace cientos de años se cree que si un gato negro se pone en la cama de una persona enferma, esa persona morirá.
